Jin Shang, a professor of biochemical engineering at the University of Western Ontario, has invented a contact lens that changes color when sugar levels change in the blood.
Those suffering from diabetes need to draw blood to check sugar levels.
Nanoparticles implanted in contact lenses interact with glucose molecules in tears. This interaction changes the color of the lens to indicate varying sugar levels.
This new medical invention could eliminate the need to draw blood to monitor glucose.
Dr Zhang's research received funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation to develop more nanocomposite applications for biomedicine.

SUGAR GLASS PRESERVES VACCINES
Scientists at Nova Bio-Pharma Technologies and the University of Oxford have invented a rectangular cartridge that can store vaccines without refrigeration.
Vaccines must be refrigerated between 4 °C to 8 °C to stay effective. This increased cost is between 14 to 20 percent (an average of $200 million for most countries).
In developing countries, where refrigeration and electricity are often scarce, vaccination is non-existent.
This new medical invention seals live vaccine viruses inside sugar. The trapped vaccines can be stored at temperatures of 45 C without any degradation for months.
The process mixes the live viruses with sucrose and trehalose. The solution is then dried on a plastic film that hardens into a sugar-glass cartridge.
The vaccine is immobilized and kept in suspended animation inside the sugar-glass. When needed the cartridge is simply screwed into a standard vaccine syringe for injection.

A new medical invention has been created by scientists at Harvard Medical School.
The new invention is a contact lens that can dispense a regular dose of antibiotics to your eye for more than a month.
A biodegradable polymer film is mixed with a medication (antibiotic) and coated with hydrogel, which is the same material used to make contact lenses.
The film slowly releases the medication into the eye at a rate of 134 micrograms each day for 30 days.
Eye drops are used to dispense most eye medications but they are inefficient. Only about 1 to 7 percent of eye drop medications are absorbed into the eye because most of it drips out.
Patients find eye drops cumbersome and often forget to take them, which is why scientists believe this new medical invention will dispense eye medication more easily and effectively.

A digital pen is one of the new electronic inventions that can help us record information.
Despite the digital age, we still use pens. But it would be great to have our handwritten notes and drawings digitally recorded without having to use a scanner.
The Zpen from Dane-Elec is a wireless pen that uses a clip-on receiver to digitally record what you write.
It uploads the information to your computer where it can be viewed, edited and filed as a word processing document.
The digital pen utilizes character recognition software and works by recording movement. Features include profile creation, a dictionary and fifteen language options.

FACE LIFTING
A wrap is soaked with sterile saline and applied to the face. Then cold air is blown over the wrap to freeze the underlying fat cells. This is done without damaging the skin or surrounding tissues.
The photos on the right show the face lift before and after the procedure.
There is no pain medication or recovery time required because there are no needles, drugs, knifes, lasers or suction used in this process.
This non surgical face lift technology is known as cryolipolysis™ (cold lipolysis), which means the breakdown of fat by freezing
The Food and Drug Administration approved this procedure in September, 2010 as a cooling technology for eliminating fat cells without harming the skin.
Thousands have already received this non surgical face lift procedure. The average cost is about $1500 to $3,000.

The solution is to keep premature babies warm but an incubator costs $20,000 and requires electricity which is difficult to find in developing countries, particularly in rural areas.
Parents resort to drastic solutions to keep their babies warm. They attach hot water bottles to them or place them under light bulbs, which is not only ineffective but unsafe. As a result, 4 million premature babies die each year. Two-thirds of deaths occur in ten countries and 40% of those occur in India.
Those that survive endure severe long term health problems (diabetes, heart disease, mental dysfunction) because they're battling hypothermia instead of growing.
To solve this problem Jane and Rajan, graduates of Stanford University, created an ingeniously simple, portable, reusable infant incubator that requires no electricity and costs less than thirty dollars.
It is safe and intuitive to use. It has no moving parts and can be easily sterilized. It looks like a tiny sleeping bag but it's design is very clever.
It has a pouch that contains a "phase-change wax material" that radiates heat throughout the insulation at a temperature of 37 degrees Celius (98 F) - the temperature critical for the child's survival.
The pouch is removed from the insulated blanket and activated by placing it in hot water for 15 minutes. It's then placed into the blanket. The phase-change material maintains a constant temperature for 4 hours by absorbing heat if the baby gets too hot, and giving heat if the baby gets too cold.

NEEDLE-LESS INJECTION
This future invention is a device for delivering medication and vaccinations through the skin.
As an alternative to injecting a needle, micro-poration is a painless method of transferring medication (intraepidermal) into the body using laser technology.
A handheld laser creates micro pores in the epidermis of the skin for the transfer of molecules.
It has a familiar comparison to the "needle-less" device used by Dr. "Bones" McCoy on Star Trek. The popular sci-fi series has inspired more than a few new inventions including the "laser" and the cell phone.
This new micro-poration technology is painless to use and requires no supervision to administer. The interfaced controls regulate the dosage.

WILL HOSPITAL ROBOTS BE THE NURSES OF THE FUTURE?
*In the next few years, tasks like delivering medication and food or transporting laundry and trash could be carried out by specially-developed “service robots” in hospitals. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, thousands of these robots are expected to be introduced in the U.S. as the elderly population grows and the health-care system tries to find ways of dealing with increasing costs and a shortage of doctors and nurses. The article explains:
*This new robotic breed is boasting features increasingly found in smartphones, gaming consoles and other consumer electronics, from advanced sensors and motion detectors to powerful microprocessors and voice activation. The service robots are self-aware, intelligent, and able to navigate changing environments, even chaotic hospital settings.
*These blue-collar robots, developed by companies including InTouch and Aethon, can enable doctors to do their rounds virtually and can sync with other medical devices to let doctors remotely obtain information from monitors and gadgets. The robots have advanced sensors, giving them location-awareness and navigational skills, so they can stay out of the way of busy doctors and nurses. They can also carry food, medication, medical records, laundry, trash and other items from one area of the hospital to another

Membudayakan ICT dikalangan Jururawat
keputusan makmal, x-ray, memesan ubatan, diet. Ini dapat memaksimumkan lagi tugasan
para jururawat. Manakala data/rekod para
pesakit dapat dikesan dan disimpan dengan kadar segera serta menjimatkan masa. Melalui
rujukan internet, info terkini mengenai jagarawatan, kajian sesuatu penyakit
